Description

Stedman Doubles was originally composed by Peter Maxwell Davies in 1956 for clarinet and three percussionists. It was revised for clarinet and one percussionist in 1968. The work shows the influence of Indian music upon the composer, who was writing a university degree thesis on that subject at the time. The piece has as its basic 'set' pitches and note values based on the bell-peals of the title. The form is based on the threefold plan of ancient Christian hymns.
