As a twenty-first century musician, I have always felt privileged to be able to drift from one “style” of music to another, creating recital programs that incorporate works from a variety of time periods and styles. Not only is does it keep me engaged and excited by a diverse set of repertoire, but it also reflects the cultural “melting pot” that our modern world has become through the ease of travel and information sharing via technology. Metatation was composed as a sort of experiment, with the goal of finding a way to bring all of these influences on my musical identity together. Throughout the piece my intention was to fuse elements from a wide variety of musical aesthetics, such as serialism, indeterminacy, Romanticism, and other seemingly disparate styles into one cohesive work.
