Description
Smoky Mokes is a cakewalk and two-step composed by Tin Pan Alley composer Abe Holzmann (1874–1939) in 1899, arranged for mallet ensemble and drum set by Wessela Kostowa. One of Holzmann's earliest published works, the piece became a popular instrumental of the late 19th century ragtime era, performed by leading bands and orchestras of the time including the John Philip Sousa Band. Kostowa's arrangement brings the lively, syncopated character of the original cakewalk to a contemporary mallet ensemble setting, distributing the melody and rhythmic drive across glockenspiel, vibraphone, xylophone, two marimbas, and drum set.
