These have slightly shorter, thicker handles, that feel GREAT, pull the balance point back towards the player slightly, and cushion the hand nicely with big motions. They cut quite a lot, and can play over the top 3.5 octaves of a marimba or the full range of a vibraphone with ease. They do have a mellower bottom end if needed in quieter passages. The tone is warmer than you'd expect with a lot less "slap" than similar mallets. You can play octaves with these on the narrow upper bars just fine. I wish they had a "2.5" hardness to fill the gap from this to the #3
