McCarthy-9's, The-4T/CD

The 9s is a solo timpani work with CD accompaniment by Daniel McCarthy (b. 1955). Written for Brian Frasier of The Boston Conservatory, a timpani student of Keith Aleo, the piece is built around the iconic dotted rhythms of the timpani solo from the second movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. The accompaniment track pairs those characteristic rhythms with groove-driven hand drumming sounds and caricatured samples of the orchestral music, and at times the soloist plays duets directly with sampled excerpts of the actual timpani solo.
